Locker Lives And The Luckies Who Live Them.

Friends of mine have a groovy little web series going. It’s called Locker Lives. I was lucky enough to be asked to appear in a couple of episodes, the first of which–episode 6–is now available. I have just a couple of brief appearances in both eps, meaning that I got all the joy with relatively little work. As I’m lazy, this made me very happy. I enjoyed the gigs enormously.

The gorgeous Rachelle Cassius, Locker Lives cast member, is at the head of the class.

Locker Lives looks at a television series that has had an inexplicably long run–inexplicable in part because it’s set in a high school, and a number of the cast members have, shall we say, grown out of their roles, yet still play them. As they dream of working on bigger, better things, they hang in with LL because it pays the bills. Ah, the glamourous life of an actor.

My character, Samantha, is one of the producers of the series, and even she is baffled at its endurance. Like many a producer of many a television series, I’ve no doubt.

Cheers, guys. It was lovely guest starring. Which is how I choose to think of it. ;-)

Interested in advertising? Look at this.

My friend Tom Megginson is a smart, ethical, funny ad guy. See? They do exist. Tom and I have a running joke that, when we lived in the same city, I would get on the bus to work in the morning, check my Facebook page on my Blackberry, and find that he had sent me a message saying something like, “Look behind you.”  He’d be sitting at the back of the bus. We’d proceed to exchange messages while sitting just feet from one another.

Tom is the brother-in-law of Sweet Tarts Takeaway creator Bonnie Robinson. That makes him okay in my book. As does everything else about him.

Work that matters. There is such a thing, you know.

He has an interesting blog on advertising, and often uses it to point out bizarre, hilarious, and sometimes outright offensive adverts from around the world. I find I’m more “Meh” than he is about a lot of things, but then, I’m not really a very good person, and I compensate for this precisely by having friends like Tom. So do yourself a favour and visit Work that Matters. There’s a lot of pointless crap on the intertubes. This isn’t part of it. And isn’t that nice?

She’s hot, she’s sporty, and she can cook, too!

My beloved friend Kate Drummond, whom some of you may remember as my fellow Tart, Sue, has a great site called A Jock’s Guide. It’s a site devoted to cooking, from the perspective of someone who, unlike me, gets more activity than simply eating. She’s enthusiastic and talented, and you should watch her. Because I say so.

I’m baaaaaaack . . . .

It's the Year of the Dragon next week!

Are chills running down your spine? Do you have an urge to run away?

Don’t! It’s just me. Surprise!

I’ve been away for, er, awhile. But I’ve got rather a good excuse. Some of the readers of this blog (all, what, four of you) may know that I recently moved from Ottawa to Stratford, Ontario.

A question that I’ve gotten a lot–understandably–is, “Are you moving there to act with the Festival?” The Stratford Shakespeare Festival (as it’s now known) is the continent’s largest classical theatre festival, and celebrates its 60th season this year. While I will be delighted to audition for them in time, if they’ll see me (and as they pretty much see anyone with a decent CV and Equity status, I believe they will), I rather doubt that they’ll be in great need of an actress with my particular profile. I am, however, continuing with my usual role of delivering lectures and writing notes for the Festival, something I enjoy enormously; I will be giving the Table Talk lecture on Wanderlust, and a pre-show lecture on Much Ado About Nothing.

But while I have long wanted to live here, and of course am attracted in large part by the wonderful fact of the Festival, I did not move here with specific dreams of acting on Stratford stages. I came here for personal reasons, including a real need for a change of scene, and change of pace in my professional and other lives. I’ve been here for almost a month, and am just now settling in in a real way that makes me feel I actually live here. I am looking incredibly forward to living through a whole summer here, with the Festival, the farmers’ markets, the beautiful Garden of Eden that is this part of Ontario.

Part of my move involved giving me more time to attend to various creative endeavours. In the near future, you can look for more poetry readings on here, as well as some podcasts, short films, and whatever else takes my fancy.

Best wishes for the most sparkly and prosperous 2012 anyone could ever hope for. And best wishes for the auspicious Year of the Dragon, which begins 23 January. It would seem we have no excuse, at least as far as the cosmos are concerned, NOT to do well this year!
